Why I'm running for Deputy Mayor
Gatlin Sandhu co-founded and built CarPhonix with his father, later becoming Canadian Sales Manager for one of the world's largest car-audio manufacturers while continuing to run the business. But the road that led him here wasn't a straight line. Here's his story, in his own words.
I've experienced a lot of different chapters in my life.Some I'm incredibly proud of. Others were difficult, and some came with lessons I had to learn the hard way.As a young person, I faced circumstances that forced me to grow up quickly. I made mistakes. I got myself into trouble. There were periods when I didn't have the stability or direction that I have today.I don't share that looking for sympathy, and I certainly don't share it because I believe difficult experiences automatically make someone stronger.I share it because of what I chose to do with those experiences.I learned.I learned about consequences. I learned about responsibility. I learned how quickly life can change. Most importantly, I learned that where you find yourself at one point in your life doesn't have to determine where you end up.With the help of my father, who believed in me and helped give me an opportunity to build something better, I started down a very different road.Together, we built a business. Over the years, I learned what it means to be responsible for customers, employees, bills, decisions and the reputation attached to your name. I eventually had the opportunity to work for one of the largest car-audio manufacturers in the world as its Canadian Sales Manager while continuing to operate CarPhonix.None of those things erased the difficult chapters that came before them.They became part of the reason I approach life the way I do today.People who really know me know that when I put my mind to something, I don't do it halfway. I research it. I ask questions. I learn the rules and the processes. I try to understand why things work the way they do. And when I encounter a setback, I keep going.That same persistence eventually led me somewhere I never expected: municipal politics.My experiences dealing with the Municipality of Bayham made me want to understand municipal government. So I started reading. I started asking questions. I started learning about bylaws, policies, procedures, budgets and how decisions are actually made.And the more I learned, the more convinced I became that I wanted to do more than simply complain about the things I believed could be better.I wanted to put my name forward and try to change them.That's a big part of why I'm running for Deputy Mayor.I'm not asking anyone to believe I've lived a perfect life.I haven't.I'm asking people to look at the whole journey, the difficult circumstances, the mistakes, the lessons, the rebuilding, the work and the person those experiences ultimately helped me become.My life has taught me that circumstances can change, people can grow, and difficult problems can be overcome.But none of those things happen by giving up.And if there's one quality I know I'll bring to the job every single day, it's that.Don't give up.Gatlin Sandhu
